The Nature of The Place

Here's some info about the flora and fauna you may see on your walks.

There is much diversity in this area and the Retreat has all four of the basic terrain types common to the Okanagan Valley. It is this variety of terrain that provides a wide range of habitat for such versatility of life here and is part of the priority habitat for many 'threatened', 'at risk' or 'endangered' species.

The terrains include:

wetland/riparian
rugged terrain (mainly cliffs and rocky talus)
coniferous forest
grassland/shrub-steppe

If you see any species of flora or fauna not on our lists, especially if they are classified as 'species at risk', 'threatened' or 'endangered' please let us know so we can add them to the lists and also inform appropriate agencies or conservation groups about your sighting.

We have included a fairly comprehensive, but not necessarily complete, list of the most common life- forms you may encounter on the trails and elsewhere.

Please avoid any poison ivy you may see, it's not abundant here but there is a bit of it around. If you encounter ticks (Rocky Mountain ticks, for example) you are encouraged to remove and squish them as required.
